On Bikes and David Byrne Etc.

I've been a fan of David Byrne since I was womb-bound, fairly certain.

This link is to his journal of sorts and the top story is one about Hasidic men removing bike lanes from their neighborhood in Brooklyn to further discourage young people from riding by in their scantily clad get-ups. Pretty insane. Byrne has some nice insights that branch further out from there and beyond. Also, it reminds me of something Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr said, "To have doubted one's own first principles is the mark of a civilized man." (which is funny since another blogger was talking about OWH recently too) Indeed.

Exciting news: David Byrne is releasing a new album in which he collaborates with fat Boy Slim and has guest vocalists on every track. It's, apparently, a dance album. i can't wait. Some of the guests include Florence Welch (Florence + The Machine), Sharon Jones, Sia, and Cyndi Lauper, to name a few.

Byrne says he wants to see if it's possible to achieve a sort of narrative within club music in a club setting. Whatever, i'll be dancing to it, regardless.

David Byrne article about bike lanes, free expression, and multi-culturalism, etc.

Here Lies Love

He's also done a plethora of kick ass collaborations prior, as well (one of my favorite punny titles "Sex & Violins):

Johnny Mathis, My Holiday Hero

So, I popped this record on the ol' player and was pretty amazed. I'm not one for holiday tunes, but this Johnny Mathis, Merry Christmas album has this darkness to it. And, darkness, I like.

This post is sort of a bust, because I couldn't find an mp3 or anything, so, take my word for it and buy the album and be darkly merry.

this. is. the. bag. must. have.

I'm always toting my rather expensive camera equipment around in a rather shoddy nylon le sport sac bag, banging it into walls, corners, cars, etc. I need something sturdy, something wearable, something classic, lasting, and something I can love forever. Behold.

I wonder if floor #3 knows how blue floor #1 is and if #1 knows how yellow #3 is and whether they even notice.

The Dishes are Done, Man

It was 2004. I was a college graduate. I hated my degree. I wasn't going to be a consultant, rhetorician, or use my speech degree in any practical way I could foresee. I went to Spain. I moved from LA to Salt Lake. I rode horses for a living and worked in a saddle shop.
Life wasn’t bad.

My mom fell in a pool. Drowned. Lived. I spent time with her to make sure.
I went home again.
I came back to Salt Lake.

I got a job. One of those real-type jobs with a key-fob name badge, a job that society loves. One with benefits and 401k and formalized fax cover sheets. I made coffee in break rooms, ate lunch at horribly marketed rural restaurants; I knew this couldn’t be it.

I grew up an artist raised by artists (well, 1 artist and 1 mystical truck driver, pretty sure that's an art all of its own). I’ve been told I think too much. Thinking leads me to curiosity which leads me to investigation. Life as investigation, that’s pretty much my treatment of the day to day. I’ll sit behind a desk, ride a horse, sweep a floor, climb a mountain, get married, jump off a cliff, just to know what it feels like. I hate second-hand expertise. I want to know it.

I enrolled in school, again. Painting and drawing. This was it. My first degree was in something I wanted to investigate: speech patterns, rhetoric, symbols. Wanting to learn how to paint came with acquired knowledge and lack thereof and the willingness to humble myself. I didn’t know shit about art. I thought I knew, I wanted to know, and then I knew I needed to know. For me, art isn’t all subjective; art is as much a cultural history as it is opinion. It’s really a study in applied anthropology. It’s lifetimes melded together and expressed over and over. An endless translation reiterated by anyone.

It’s 2009.
I’ve finished another degree.
I've lost my mother.
I told one of my professors that the perfect description for an art major would be to call oneself a ‘Materials Theorist’. I’m pretty sure that title merges both my degrees into one. And goddamn, I’m proud of that.

+ so, this photo is hilarious. it's me and some of the other grads with some of the department faculty. i had someone else take the photo. in this day and age of digital photography, no one seems to know what to do when i hand them a manual focus camera. voilĂ .

And With This, I Could Conquer the World

So, I saw this today on the UO Blog and I want want want. The brand is called Triskaidekaphobia, fear of the number 13. I don't fear 13. I FEAR the dentist. It's the one time in life when all of my delusions, paranoia, skepticism, and fear come together as unstoppable force of irrationality. I think this necklace would be like a confidence builder- like a big 'fuck you' to the dentist. It would make me feel strong, unstoppable. Rational.

And Then There Was Light

Momma, I miss you. I dream of you. They're getting better. I'm not trying to help as much. You try to show me things. I try to follow.

I bought the second dress today. It's beige and blonde. You always said to wear monochromatic colors with my hair. You were/are right.

i haven't needed an umbrella as of late. You took such pride in a sturdy umbrella. An NYC umbrella, you'd say.

I dreamt I was on the phone with you. It was such a great conversation. Call me again?

666 Ways to Divide a Life

So, here it is! My six hundred sixty sixth post. Woo. Boo. Whatever. So, while the devil is possessing me, I've got these things to say:

If I hear "news" about the status of Tiger Woods one more time, I'll fucking eat my own ears off.

Art school should never be open enrollment.

Why aren't there more Dim Sum restaurants?

What will it take for someone to make an album that will blow my damn socks off?

Also, I don't entirely understand the premise of this Lemme+Grohl, Probot song. Is it a remake of Ace of Spades? It's got almost the same riff. Maybe it was just coincidence. ? Someone, fill me in.
